Intensive Program in EMDR Therapy with Children & Adolescents

The AGATE Institute
Ana Gomez Attachment & Trauma Education
EMDR-Sandtray Specialist Intensive Program:
Next intensive retreat: March 2017

8 hours of online training
40 hours of intensive-retreat training
A total of 40 CEUs (EMDRIA CEUs). No credits are given for the 8 hours online.
Full program: $2015 USD: Includes training materials, 8 hours of online training, 30 hours of intensive training & all breakfasts and lunches

This training will give you tools to work with:
Children and adolescents that do not acknowledge or do not want to talk about the traumatic or adverse events
Children and adolescents with phobia of the trauma
Children and adolescents living in unpredictable and chaotic environments or under the care of child protective services
Children and adolescents with parents that are not able to provide appropriate support
Children and adolescents with attachment injuries and unmet attachment needs
Children and adolescents with a number of mechanisms of adaptation such as avoidance, dissociation etc.
Children and adolescents that become dysregulated or dissociative when trauma memories are brought up or activated
Children and adolescents that despite going through a lengthy preparation phase cannot tolerate the accessing of traumatic material
This is an innovative training that presents the EMDR- Sandtray protocol developed by Ana Gomez.
It is not necessary to have the formal training in sandtray therapy as this protocol has its own procedures and principles rooted within the AIP model.

Objectives:
Clinicians will learn:
•   Case conceptualization skills to use with children and adolescents with complex clinical presentations that may require greater level of distance from the traumatic material.
•   Basic Sandtray therapy procedures such as how to set up the sand tray, miniature collection etc.
•   To set the various levels of distance offered by the EMDR-Sandtray protocol.
•   How to develop resources during preparation phase using the sand tray including:
•   Safe-calm-happy place
•   Helpers
•   Resource spots
•   The little self-healing place
•   To work with “parts” and the “little self” using the EMDR-Sandtray protocol.
•   To set up the assessment phase honoring the various levels of distance.
•   To use interweaves within the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol such as:
•   Interweaves directed to meet attachment needs
•   Interweaves directed to complete truncated defense responses
•   Interweaves directed to reclaim repressed and dissociated affective states
•   Interweaves directed to modulate arousal
•   Interweaves directed to integrate and work directly with parts of the personality
•   To playfully do the installation phase and body scan using the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol.
Videos and lots of pictures of therapeutic work will be presented to give participants a very tangible and concrete experience.

1.    In the intensive program in the  EMDR-Sandtray Protocol you will receive 8 hours of online training where you will first be guided in creating your own sandtray miniature collection. You will learn about Sand play and Sand tray therapy history as well as the difference between the EMDR-Sandtray protocol and other therapies using sand tray. In addition, clinicians will learn basic principles of ego state theory and Internal Family Systems as well as dissociation in children and.
2.    Following these 8 hours, you will attend an intensive-week long training (40 hours) in beautiful Sedona, AZ in an intimate setting where you can practice and receive feedback directly from Ana Gomez the developer of the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol.
3.    This training covers in great depth the eight phases of EMDR therapy with children and adolescents and the use of the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol. This is especially useful for children that present with dysregulation of the affective system and require greater distance from the traumatic material. In addition, children that use a number of mechanisms of adaptation such as avoidance can highly benefit from using this protocol.
4.    The EMDR-Sandtray protocol offers various levels of distance from the traumatic material: The actual memory of trauma where the self is present in the story, to the general story/world where the self is absent. One of the wonderful assets of sand tray therapy is its capacity to access implicit and right hemisphere material through the use of stories, symbols and archetypes.
5.    It is not necessary to have the formal training in sandtray therapy as this protocol has its own procedures and principles rooted within the AIP model. A thorough hands on approach is used, as Ana Gomez will provide individualized support and guidance as you practice in small groups the use of the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol.
7.    Once you complete the training, you will be in our website as a referral source.

Level 3- Processing &
Level 4-Dyadic work.
4.

These strategies are used with the purpose of assisting parents in assimilating and integrating thwarted attachment experiences that currently inhibit the parent's ability to respond contingently and synchronically to the child’s needs and inhibits the child's capacity to connect and attach securely.  A typology of interweaves will be presented that include interweaves that assist adults (parents) in:
v Modulating arousal
v Maintaining dual awareness and a mindful presence
v Challenging procedural memory
v Recalibrating the nervous system
v Challenging the window of tolerance
v Maintaining safety while embracing exploration, and risk

v Reclaiming dissociated, repressed and dismissed cognitive, affective and somatic material and reconnecting to the mind, the heart and the body in fresh and novel ways.
9.    Dyadic processing and the use of dyadic-reparative interweaves will be demonstrated and practiced. In addition, interweaves that heal the child’s “little me” using inner child strategies, ego states and Internal Family Systems (IFS) will be demonstrated and practiced. "Storytelling" and intergenerational interweaves that can repair attachment wounds will be presented, demonstrated and practiced.
